Anxiety is one of our most common difficulties. Anxious thoughts and feelings can be challenging and they are usually rooted in some level of fear. Together, we will explore your thoughts, feelings and even physical 'symptoms' to understand where they come from, and how to reduce or manage them. Feeling worried or nervous is normal, but where these feelings become overwhelming, they can limit your engagement and enjoyment of life.
Our work can help you feel less 'stuck' and more able to make decisions, so that you are in control, not your anxiety.
Many people experience events in their lives which result in trauma, and this can have deep and long lasting effects both psychologically and physiologically. Working with trauma requires a strong bond, where you feel safe within our therapeutic relationship. This is likely to be longer term work, as we need to establish a robust framework within which healing can happen. There may also be some body-focused work - somatic therapy - as trauma is held in the body. Dr. Gabor Mate (a Hungarian-Canadian physician who has done extensive research and written numerous books on trauma and its effects) explains, "trauma is not what happens to you, it's what happens inside of you as a result of what happened to you."
We can experience grief in relation to many things as well as the death of a person; for example the loss of a beloved pet, loss of opportunity, redundancy, the ending of a relationship or friendship and loss of physical ability or ill-health. I will provide a safe space for you to unpack and explore all that you are feeling, without advice giving or any pressure to 'get over it'. Grief is unique to each person - there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to experience it and all your feelings are valid.
Working with clients in 'later life' stages is an honour and a privilege. Some come to me following the loss of a loved one, often a spouse, who they may have spent much of their lives with. Sometimes we look back and sometimes we explore what the coming years might look like. This kind of therapy may not always be about supporting great change, but may instead be about finding a sense of fulfillment, inner peace
and greater acceptance of self.
Feeling good about ourselves, practicing self compassion, recognising our unique abilities and being comfortable with the things we can't do or find more challenging - these all help us feel 'good enough'. However, for many of my clients, low self-confidence, feelings of unworthiness and not being 'good enough' are more familiar. Knowing where these negative beliefs and self-doubts come from is the first step in making change and together we will take a dive into the past and make connections to the present As you develop greater awareness and acceptance of who you are and learn to show yourself the compassion and love you show to others, confidence and self-belief will grow.
In order to make therapy more accessible, I offer online sessions over Zoom. I can also offer a hybrid of in person and online, allowing greater flexibility and access to support for those times when you aren't able to attend in person. My aim is always to develop a safe and supportive relationship with my clients and I believe this can be achieved online, as well as face to face.
